As reported on 9news.com: http://www.9news.com/news/article.aspx?storyid=79216
9NEWS and the metro-Denver Crime Stoppers chapter have teamed up to help the community fight back against identity theft by holding a Shred-a-thon on November 17.
Police cadets from metro-area law enforcement agencies along with the licensed and bonded employees of the local shredding company Shred-it will shred your documents for free at five locations throughout the metro area.
The locations include the 9NEWS studios at 500 Speer Boulevard (Speer and Logan) in Denver, the Aurora Municipal Building at 14999 E. Alameda Parkway in Aurora, the Englewood Police Department at 3600 S. Elati Street in Englewood, the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office at 13101 East Broncos Parkway in Centennial, and the Westminster Police Department at 9110 Yates Street in Westminster.
The Shred-a-thon will run from 6 a.m. to noon at the 9NEWS studios and from 7 a.m. to noon at the other locations. The Shred-a-thon is a fundraiser for the metro-Denver Crime Stoppers chapter. Crime Stoppers is part of an international organization with the sole purpose of aiding local law enforcement agencies by offering rewards to help solve crimes.
Crime Stoppers does not receive public money. Instead, it relies on donations made by the public. In the past year, Crime Stoppers has helped solve 12 times as many crimes as in the past. In previous years, Crime Stoppers would give away rewards averaging $6,000-$7,000 per year. The organization is now giving away that much each month.
Crime Stoppers representatives will be available at each Shred-a-thon location to take donations and will accept cash, checks or credit card donations. The 9NEWS/Crime Stoppers Shred-a-thon will accept up to five boxes of documents to shred.
The types of documents you CAN shred include old tax returns, old bank statements, old credit card slips, credit card receipts/offers, old checks, binders, folders, notebooks. You do not have to remove staples, alligator clips or paper clips.
Do not bring newspapers, trash, cardboard or plastics. 9NEWS will be doing a series of special reports on fraud prior to the Shred-a-thon. Look for updates on 9NEWS and 9NEWS.com.
